This week I am taking over my sister’s blog to share some of my favorite podcasts! Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing some of my personal favorite social media mental health resources. First, I will dive into some of the best podcasts I have listened to about mental health in sports.
Real Pod by Victoria Garrick is hands down my favorite podcast. I got introduced to her Podcast by some of my cross country teammates and have been obsessed with it ever since. Every Wednesday Garrick releases a podcast about mental health, body image, and self-love. She frequently has guests that are athletes either in the professional world or at the collegiate level. Her episodes are usually around 40 minutes, so perfect to listen to when working out, driving, or cleaning!
Some of my favorite Real Pod Episodes:
“Paralympic Gold Medalist- Mallory Weggemann” This episode left me feeling so inspired and motivated! Garrick interviewed Mallory Weggemann, a paralympic swimmer who suffered a career-ending injury early in her career. However, that did not stop her from going on and winning two Paralympic medals in the 2012 and 2016 games.
y“The Max Browne Interview- What Really Happened to the Nation’s #1 Recruit” This was my favorite Real Pod episode. Max Browne was the best high school football player in the country and it seemed as though he was guaranteed a spot in the NFL. Things took a turn during his college years as he suffered multiple injuries and never really had the opportunity to be the starting quarterback. This episode was raw, emotional, and heartbreaking; but definitely a must listen!
Another one of my favorite podcasts is Convos Over Cold Brew with Emma Abrahamson. I have always been a pretty big fan of Abrahamson as she has a YouTube channel all about running. Her podcast is relatively new but I am already such a huge fan of it. The main focus of her podcast is mental health in the sport of running. Even if you are not a runner or an athlete, this podcast is defiantly worth a listen! Her episodes are also around 40 minutes long, and I love listening to them when I am getting ready or cleaning my room!
Some of my favorite Convos Over Cold Brew Episodes:
“Therese Haiss: Mental Health in Competitive Running, Becoming an NCAA D1 Coach, + The Highs and Lows of Professional Running” This was the first episode I listened to and I could relate to Haiss’s experiences involving running. I think this episode brought to light about how running is not always perfect. Defiantly a must-listen if you need some extra motivation and inspiration!
“Bonus Episode: Your Body is Going to Change” This episode Abrahamson dove into her body image journey through her high school running years. This episode was defiantly one of my favorite podcast episodes because I could relate to it. Personally, this past year my body has changed a lot since I am lifting and eating more. Some days it can be hard to look in the mirror and realize I am not the same as I was in high school. But I remind myself that I am stronger now than I ever have been before.
Podcasts have defiantly been a new favorite of mine and I have a few more that I want to check out. Here are some other podcasts that I want to start listening too!
CITIUS MAG Podcast with Chris Chavez: A lot of my favorite professional runners have been guests on this podcast so I can not wait to listen to it!
Keeping Track with Molly Huddle, Alysia Montano, and Roisin McGettigan: Oops, another running podcast. However, this podcast dives into the culture and politics of running- which is a different type of perspective on the sport. As a sociology minor, I can not wait to listen to this and learn how race, gender, and socioeconomic class play a role in the sport of running.
Next week I will share some of my favorite Tik Tokers who advocate for mental health and self-love! Make sure to follow @head_inthegame on Instagram to stay connected!
