Welcome back, everyone! This time we’re taking a little break from sports. I wanted to share with you one of my role models. Someone I have looked up to over the years is Bobby Hall, better known as Logic. He has been an advocate for mental health awareness in all aspects of his life including music, his book, and his own unique experiences.
I learned a lot about Logic from a series on Netflix called Rapture. This documentary explored Logic’s personal life. Logic was born and raised in a suburb in Maryland, known as the “ghetto”. He went through a lot in his childhood, as his father was addicted to drugs, and he first hand experienced how drugs can destroy someone’s life. Growing up in this environment strained Logic's mental health. He constantly was exposed to drugs, violence, and discrimination. He wanted to raise awareness for this issue instead of getting involved in these activities.
He started writing music as a way to escape from the racing thoughts in his head. He wanted to help people and raise awareness for mental health, violence, discrimination. He wrote “Everybody” which became a hit album for him. His song 1-800-273-8255 went virtual. The song was about suicide. Logic took the perspective of calling the suicide hotline, and Alyssa Caria took the role of answering his phone call. The lyrics of this song were very powerful, and personally I have related to many things he mentioned in the song.
After listening to the song, some lyrics stood out to me.
A few months ago, I was in a very dark place and my mind was racing with thoughts, sometimes very dark thoughts. However, after listening to Logic’s song, he reminded me that our feelings are valid, and it is okay to feel the lows. His song also showed me that I am not alone. So many people struggle with mental health, and there are so many resources to receive help.
Another issue Logic has talked about in his songs is bullying and receiving hate. Logic receives a lot of hate for his music since he does not rap about “normal” things. Instead of rapping about drugs, alcohol, or sex, he writes about personal and important issues. This is one reason why I look up to Logic. He is very passionate, and no matter how much hate he receives, he still continues to be an advocate for an issue bigger than himself.
In his song called, “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind”, he talks about some of the hate he receives.
I really am inspired by Logic for using his platform for talking about such important issues. I know from personal experience how hard it is to share with people your traumatic experiences. Logic has shared his own personal experiences, from receiving hate to feeling suicidal thoughts, and he has used it to raise awareness and help people.
Logic also has talked about other important issues, such as racial discrimination.
“They wanna see a black man lose
They wanna see a black man fall down.” (Cocaine)
In our society, racial discrimination is a serious issue. Logic has created several songs, including the one above (Cocaine) about racial discrimination. I applaud Logic for talking about this issue, as most artists and media in today’s society rarely mention it. Our society needs to change, and Logic is starting by creating powerful messages within his music.
I have been a fan of Logic for several years. He is someone I have always looked up to, and he inspires me in several ways. After listening to his music for several years, I have learned several things. One of the biggest things I have learned from him is that you can do anything you want, no matter what anyone says. He also has taught me that I am allowed to feel what I feel, and my feelings are okay to have.
Logic will always be my favorite artist and I will continue to support him.
John Wooden said, “Being a role model is the most powerful form of educating.” Logic will continue to educate people by using his voice to talk about important issues.
